This Snowy Owl drawing is the third in a series of wildlife chalk art drawings
Owls have a unique wing design that allows them to fly in near total silence, and at slower speeds than most birds. They operate in a world of stealth and their hearing is almost as astute as their vision.
You can hear other birds as they fly nearby, but not owls. And if you do happen to see an owl at close range, especially in the dark, it can be very unnerving. The lack of sound when you’re seeing something that normally makes sound puts the brain on a subtle alert – “something’s not quite right here”, and it triggers a fear response because it’s predators that do the sneaking up.
It can be just as unsettling as hearing an animal that you can’t see, or something touching you in the water. Gah!
