First Hole

Golf drawing from Olden Times

First in a series of golf drawings

T  he problem with my game can be summed up in two words: anger management.

In fact, I very nearly named this piece Anger Management, but The Colonel noted that the drawing didn’t show anyone wigging out.

“It doesn’t have to,” I said. “It’s art!”

She rolled her eyes and pinched the bridge of her nose.

“Well wasn’t there a movie called that with Adam Sandler? And didn’t he make another golf movie?” she asked.

“Maybe he’ll buy the original!”

“Maybe you’re a bonehead,” she said, with a touch of snort.

As usual, she was right (er, not about me being a bonehead, I hope).  Adam Sandler didn’t buy the original (someone else did…yay!) and I named it First Hole, as it was to be my first golf drawing.

A year or so later, one of my clients who, miraculously, was familiar with the course, wrote and told me that this was actually the last hole, not the first.

So maybe I am a bonehead…

The Process of Drawing

First comes extensive research. No artsy-fartsy 'interpretation'; it has to be done right.  No guesswork.

Then comes 300-ish hours of painstaking, garment-rending, hair-pulling, hunched-over, aspirin and coffee-fueled toil at the drawing table before collapsing at the finish line.

"I've always felt that artists who gabble on about 'how relaxing art is for them' are full of crap.  I always thought Hemingway got it right: '...you sit down at a typewriter and open a vein'.

You've gotta bleed a little"

Folks use Owen's art for all kinds of things...

“Starting in 2002, we’ve been using Owen Garratt’s prints for Christmas parties, golf prizes and charity auctions. People LOVE them, and the organizers always ask us for more of Owen’s work or next time!”

Lisa Beier
IMAC Design Group

"This is a spectacular display of customer service!! These are being used, ironically enough, as awards/appreciations for an Executive Sales Management series that emphasizes all aspects of extraordinary customer service.

I will be speaking to the group, using your example here, as a great example of “How it should be done”!

Thanks again for your excellent service!"

Brian Normoyle

"After 32 years in the realm of Real Estate, I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, his work has been the best house warming gift that I have given my clients--they are just thrilled and the nice thing is that they can exchange it for another if it doesn't suit them. I am very proud to arrive at their door with an original gift!

Thanks for everything, Owen,!"

Diana Huibers
Haida Realty/Coldwell Banker

“I gave Owen’s art as gifts to some top executives in the Pipeline industry. They were delightedly received as something out of the ordinary that they would proudly hang on their wall. The customer service from Owen’s team and their knowledge and friendliness was a breath of fresh air and they are a pleasure to work with.”

Where was this piece taken from? I’d love to know the course if there is one.

    • The Pencilneck

This is, I’m told, the Jasper Park Lodge, in the early 1930’s.
